Call for Artists - Aiken Downtown Cultural District

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, January 8th, 2026

The City of Aiken Arts Commission is inviting local artists to submit original mural design proposals for a new public art installation celebrating Aiken’s Downtown Cultural District.
The selected mural will be installed in the Alley within the Downtown Cultural District, a highly visible and heavily foot-trafficked area beside the outdoor music stage known as Amp the Alley. The mural will serve as a vibrant visual landmark honoring Aiken’s recent designation as one of only 13 Cultural Districts in the state of South Carolina.
“This mural will celebrate the creativity, energy, and diversity that define Aiken’s arts community,” said Wendy Hirsch, Chair of the Arts Commission. “We’re excited to see how local artists interpret the spirit of our Downtown Cultural District and bring that vision to life in a way that engages both residents and visitors.”
Artists are encouraged to submit designs that are colorful, interactive, and welcoming creating a fun photo opportunity for the public. Designs should incorporate the phrase “Aiken Downtown Cultural District” and reflect a broad range of artistic disciplines, including visual arts, music, theater, dance, and written or spoken word.
The mural will be painted on removable panels and installed. The selected artist will receive a $7,000 stipend in recognition of their creative work and contribution to this public art initiative.
The call is open to artists residing in, or with strong ties to, Aiken County and the surrounding areas. All applicants are asked to describe their connection to the area as part of their submission.
