Helms College Opens HVAC Training Labs as Skilled Trades Demand Rises Across Georgia
Monday, March 16th, 2026
As demand for skilled trades workers continues to rise across Georgia and the Southeast, Helms College will celebrate the opening of new heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) training laboratories at its School of Trades on Wednesday, March 18. The new labs are designed to prepare students for careers in one of the nation’s most essential and in-demand technical fields.
In a region where reliable heating and cooling systems are critical to homes, hospitals, schools, and businesses, HVAC technicians play a vital role in maintaining the infrastructure that keeps communities functioning. The new laboratories expand Helms College’s ability to train students with the hands-on technical experience employers need.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will bring together community leaders, educators, and workforce partners to highlight the importance of career education and the growing demand for skilled technicians across the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).
“Skilled trades like HVAC are essential to our communities and our economy,” said Jennifer Tyner, VP for Marketing and Development. “These new training labs give students the opportunity to develop real technical skills, earn industry certifications, and step directly into careers that keep homes comfortable, businesses operating, and communities thriving.”
The laboratories provide students with hands-on training using industry-standard equipment and systems similar to what technicians encounter in the field. Through real-world lab experiences, students learn to install, diagnose, and maintain HVAC systems used in residential and commercial environments.
Demand for HVAC technicians continues to grow nationwide. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the field will grow about 9 percent between 2023 and 2033, faster than the average for most occupations. HVAC technicians earned a median annual wage of $59,810 in 2024, reflecting strong demand for skilled workers in the industry.
In Georgia, more than 12,000 HVAC technicians are currently employed statewide, earning an average annual wage of about $55,020, with experienced technicians earning significantly more.
The HVAC program is part of Helms College’s School of Trades, which prepares students for careers in technical fields that support critical infrastructure throughout the region. In addition to the Augusta campus, Helms College also operates HVAC training programs at its Macon campus, helping expand the pipeline of skilled technicians across Middle Georgia and the CSRA.
Community Collaboration Through Student Art
In addition to the ribbon cutting, the event will feature the dedication of a community mural created by students from Davidson Fine Arts School.
The mural reflects the shared mission of Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA and Helms College—transforming lives through education, work, and service to the community. The artwork celebrates the dignity of skilled trades and the pathways Helms College provides for individuals seeking meaningful careers.
Following the ceremony, guests will tour the new HVAC training laboratories and attend an artist reception at Edgar’s Bakehouse, showcasing artwork created by the Davidson Fine Arts students who contributed to the mural.
