Local Nonprofit Focuses on Reentry, Second Chances After Incarceration

Second Chance Month is highlighting stories of rebuilding and redemption for people returning home after incarceration. Melisha Johnson, founder of The Compassionate Advocate, says the goal is to help formerly incarcerated individuals get a fresh start with stability, support, and opportunity.
“Basically, second chance is for people who are incarcerated and they’re coming back out,” Johnson said. “We know they’re not their worst mistake.”

She says one of the biggest barriers after release is finding stable housing. “If they don’t have a place to live, it’s hard for them to do anything else. “
