Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026

The Southeastern Writers Association (SWA) is proud to announce its 52nd annual conference, scheduled to take place June 5–9, 2026, at the historic
Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island. Continuing its half-century legacy of "writers helping writers," the 2026 event will feature a revamped schedule, expanded networking opportunities, and a high-caliber faculty representing a wide array of genres.

The conference will continue its tradition of excellence with writing contests, including the Lighthouse Writing Award, the Vega Award for Speculative Fiction, and the Herbert Shippey Award for Excellence in Southern Poetry.

Acclaimed Faculty and Keynote

This year’s conference is headlined by Michael Lister, a prolific Florida-based crime novelist and accomplished songwriter. Lister will serve as the keynote speaker and lead sessions on crime writing and the craft of songwriting.

The 2026 faculty also includes:
-James D. Brewer: Master of Historical Fiction
-Bonnie Feldkamp: Expert in Nonfiction and Freelance Writing
-James Kimbrell: Award-Winning Poet
-Kyle Hannah: Representing Jumpmaster Press
In addition to large-group instructional sessions, faculty members will offer one-on-one consultations, providing paid attendees with personalized feedback and professional guidance on their manuscripts.

New Highlights for 2026
The SWA is introducing several updates to enhance the attendee experience:
-Revamped Schedule: A new program structure allows for more open mic
opportunities, giving writers a platform to share their work with peers.
-Public Book Fair: Beyond the traditional conference bookstore, the SWA will host an open-to-the-public book fair. This event invites the local community to meet and greet with featured authors and conference attendees

A Community for All Writers

“The 2026 conference promises to be one for the books,” says SWA President and Conference Director Jeff Newberry. "One of my goals as president was to bring a songwriter to teach. With Michael Lister, we get that, along with the onus of his long career as a successful crime writer."

Newberry emphasizes that the conference remains a home for writers at every stage of their career. "This conference has something for all writers. From beginners to veterans, all will find a welcoming, supporting environment at the SWA conference."
