We the People: George Washington’s 1791 Visit to Augusta Nears 235th Anniversary

On May 18, 1791, President George Washington stopped in Augusta during his Southern Tour.
Washington became president of the United States in 1789.
“He just realized that the United States were not particularly united. They were 13 separate states that decided to join forces,” said Erick Montgomery, executive director of Historic Augusta.
Washington went on a Southern Tour of the United States, stopping in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia before heading back up to Virginia.
