Hancock County School District canceled classes for the remainder of its first week back after an environmental safety issue was identified, the district said. Classes were in session Monday and Tuesday before the cancellation took effect.

The district has not disclosed the specific nature of the environmental issue. Residents in Sparta, however, have been circulating social media posts suggesting snakes and raccoons were found at school.

Miranda Edwards, a Hancock County mother, said she’s heard the rumors.

“I saw social media with all these snakes crawling towards the school,” Edwards said. “I said, oh my God.”
