Proposed ‘Recovery Village’ Aims to Help Homeless Veterans in Augusta

Augusta-Richmond County has more veterans than any county in Georgia, but service providers say many still fall between emergency shelter and permanent housing vouchers, especially veterans battling addiction.
Army veteran Steven Coffman, founder of Patton’s Pals, is proposing what he calls a missing step: a structured recovery option to help veterans transition from homelessness to stable housing. Coffman said he is 39 months sober.
Coffman’s proposal, Patton’s Battle-Born Village, would create a recovery-focused tiny home community designed to “bridge the gap” from the streets to stable housing.
Coffman pitched the project to Augusta commissioners last week. Commissioners said they support the proposal, but Coffman said that is only one step in the process.
